One innovation I find truly impressive is BluRoX, Liebherr’s latest insulation method. Instead of using conventional polyurethane foam (PU), they’ve developed an extremely effective cold insulation system using volcanic rock. This technology uses finely ground lava stone—perlite, a natural material with extremely low thermal conductivity that can also be reused. Combined with a vacuum, this material provides highly energy-efficient and compact insulation.

Efficiency vs. space: The design dilemma
European energy consumption standards have become increasingly stringent. Labels for appliances like refrigerators and freezers have already been revised several times. These standards help consumers reduce both their energy bills and CO₂ footprint, while pushing companies to keep innovating and develop even more efficient products. One straightforward solution might be to simply thicken the walls to retain the cold more effectively, but a major drawback is that it reduces the internal storage space.

More room, less waste
In traditional refrigerators and freezers, the space between the inner and outer walls, where many of the cables and components are housed, is typically filled with foam. This polyurethane foam makes recycling difficult, as it adheres to surrounding materials. BluRoX breaks that pattern: the perlite insulation can be easily removed. This means that not only the cables and vacuum panels, but also the outer panels and inner liner can be easily processed and reused. Even the perlite itself is recyclable. Thanks to the high insulation efficiency, the wall thickness can also be reduced, resulting in up to 25% more internal capacity, without changing the appliance’s external dimensions. That’s a huge benefit for the end user.

BluRoX is also significantly better for the environment. Polyurethane is a polluting material that contributes to CO₂ emissions and chemical waste, whereas perlite is a natural and non-toxic raw material.

A bold step toward innovation
I think this technology is absolutely brilliant. Innovation in the home appliance sector is often driven by cost-efficiency and marginal technical improvements. It’s inspiring to see Liebherr, as a market leader, take a bold step by investing in something truly innovative. It’s a move that sets a strong example for the rest of the industry.

If adopted on a wide scale, this innovation’s impact could be significant, not only ecologically, but economically as well: lower energy consumption, less material waste, and better recyclability. A fantastic example of circular design in action.

Quintijn Innikel (partner) on a groundbreaking, innovative sailboat
This sailboat is truly remarkable, showcasing groundbreaking and innovative technology. It was designed for the America’s Cup, a legendary sailing race that has proven to be a major driver of innovation. The America’s Cup is the oldest sailing race and active sporting event worldwide. Since 1851, the world’s best sailors have competed with the fastest boats for the aspired “Auld Mug.”

The competition is a match race between two top-tier yachts. The one known as the Defender represents the yacht club currently holding the America’s Cup, while the Challenger, represents the club vying for the title. The Challenger is selected through a series of preliminary races. According to the Deed of Gift, the winner gets to set the specifications for the yachts in the next competition. This allows changes in aspects such as rigging, draft, maximum waterline length, or total weight, ensuring that each race hosts faster and more innovative boats. Over its rich history, the America’s Cup has driven many significant technological advancements.

The 1988 race: A new dimension
One of the most significant breakthroughs occurred in the 1988 race when the San Diego Yacht Club competed as the Defender. New Zealand, the Challenger, relied on conservative regulations, assuming their vessel—a large monohull (single-hulled) yacht—would have the advantage. It was an enormous 37-meter yacht with a massive sail (up to 1,600 square meters) and two large outriggers on either side to balance its 40-man crew.

On the other hand, San Diego noticed a gap in the rules: catamarans were not prohibited. Therefore, they built a massive catamaran with a fixed wing resembling a vertical airplane wing. Due to its narrow aspect ratio, this wing efficiently converted wind into speed.

During the race, the stark contrast between the two vessels became obvious. They were in completely different leagues. San Diego’s catamaran easily outmaneuvered New Zealand’s massive monohull, sailing circles around it. A legal challenge was filed to contest the results, but the court ruled that San Diego’s catamaran complied with the rules, making the Challenger the rightful winner.

The AC75: Four times the speed of the wind
Another revolutionary leap came with foils, enabling catamarans to lift out of the water and achieve even greater speeds. In 2021, New Zealand successfully defended its title against Italy. Both boats were high-performance foiling monohulls of the AC75 class, specifically designed for the competition.

Fixed wings were replaced by a “twin-skin, soft-wing” sail concept, a hybrid of a fixed wing and a traditional sail. These boats also featured two robotic arms on deck that hydraulically shifted the foils from port to starboard, lifting the entire hull out of the water.

Every aspect of the vessel was streamlined for minimal resistance. The technology has become so efficient that these boats can sail at four times the speed of the wind. With a wind speed of ten knots, the AC75 can sail at 40 knots—truly mind-blowing!

Seamanship and innovation
The faster the boat sails, the more lift the foils generate, raising the hull higher out of the water. If not managed carefully, the boat can lift too high and bounce off the water’s surface. This led to a new role onboard: the trimmer, who controls the boat’s flight height with a console. 

The races are highly dynamic, blending seamanship and technological innovation. The America’s Cup is a celebration of sailing and innovation. Teams must be incredibly inventive to surpass the Defender’s advantage. Every effort is made to stay ahead. Being just “as good” isn’t enough—you must always be better. 

As Admiral Rous famously told Queen Victoria in 1851 when the yacht America crossed the finish line first: “Your Majesty, there is no second.”

Have you ever designed an innovative product only to face unexpected challenges when transitioning from development to production? Suddenly, adjustments pile up, causing delays, frustration, and extra costs. There is another way: design it “right the first time” by using the DfX approach.

‘With the DfX approach, you establish the foundation for a smooth transition to production right at the start of your project.’

Focus areas
DfX (Design for Excellence) is a systematic approach that ensures all critical (product) factors are incorporated from the start of product development. This method provides practical guidelines to integrate and validate aspects like production, assembly, cost, reliability, and sustainability from the beginning of your project. This results in a design that is right the first time and that seamlessly connects to the production phase.

The “X” in DfX represents excellence and is replaced by the first letter of the focus area, such as:

The foundation of DfX lies in the accumulated and explicitly documented knowledge within the organization — in the form of guidelines, design rules, product requirements, and the presence of experts and knowledge bearers. This knowledge is applied by project teams in their projects. The quality of shared knowledge and the effectiveness with which it is applied are crucial.

Knowledge within the organization
From the start, it is essential to clearly define and specify the DfX focus areas within the project — choosing areas that support the organization’s goals or are crucial for achieving the project outcome.
As a project manager, you ensure that your multidisciplinary team has the expertise needed to tackle the required challenges. Regularly consult relevant experts, especially when making critical decisions. For instance, if you want to ensure a link to the production chain, include a production stakeholder in your team. Additionally, involve key suppliers in the project to incorporate their specific knowledge and skills into the development of the (sub)product. (It’s not the first time a beautiful design can only be produced with adjustments and higher costs.)

By consistently reviewing selected DfX aspects, validating the design for each stage gate, and involving experts in critical decisions, issues and risks are identified and addressed early in the process. This structured approach minimizes the chance of significant modifications (and thus delays and higher costs) in the final project phase.

Quality and reliability
This method works very well for me as a project manager. It helps establish an early grasp on critical design factors in the project. Additionally, it provides tools to maintain control and direct the project. It is essential to keep the right stakeholders involved and to make good use of available knowledge. Moreover, it encourages organizations to continually acquire and share knowledge.

This integrated approach fosters focus within the team, leverages specific expertise within (and outside) the organization, and regularly tests the design application, allowing issues to be addressed promptly. The DfX approach enhances the quality and reliability of the delivered product and the project.

De basis voor DfX ligt in opgedane en expliciet gemaakte kennis binnen de organisatie; in de vorm van richtlijnen, ontwerpregels en producteisen en de aanwezigheid van experts en kennisdragers. Deze kennis wordt door de projectteams toegepast in hun projecten. De kwaliteit van gedeelde kennis en de effectiviteit waarmee het wordt toegepast is hierin cruciaal. 

Kennis in de organisatie
Het is belangrijk om vanaf het begin duidelijk en specifiek te zijn over de DfX-focusgebieden binnen het project – kies de gebieden die de organisatie het projectdoel ondersteunen of die cruciaal zijn voor realisatie van het projectresultaat.
Als projectmanager zorg je ervoor dat in je multidisciplinaire team de expertise beschikbaar is om de vereiste uitdagingen ook op te lossen. Raadpleeg regelmatig relevante experts, zeker bij kritische beslissingen. Zo kan je bijvoorbeeld, als je een link naar de productieketen wilt garanderen, een stakeholder van productie in je team opnemen. Betrek daarnaast ook belangrijke leverancier(s) bij het project om hun specifieke kennis en kunde mee te nemen in de ontwikkeling van het (deel)product. (Het zal niet de eerste keer zijn dat een mooi ontwerp niet of alleen met aanpassingen en hogere kosten geproduceerd kan worden).

Door geselecteerde DfX aspecten regelmatig tegen het licht te houden, het ontwerp voor elke gate te valideren en experts te betrekken bij kritische beslissingen, worden issues en risico’s al vroeg in het traject opgepakt en verholpen. Door deze structurele aanpak minimaliseer je de kans op significante aanpassingen (en daarmee vertraging en hogere kosten) in de eindfase van het project.

Kwaliteit en betrouwbaarheid
Deze methode werkt voor mij als projectmanager heel goed. Het helpt om al vroeg in het project houvast te krijgen op kritische design factoren. Daarnaast geeft het handvatten om grip te houden en sturing te geven aan het project. Hierbij is het belangrijk om de juiste stakeholders betrokken te houden bij het project en de beschikbare kennis goed te gebruiken. Daarnaast dwingt de methode organisaties om (doorlopend) kennis te vergaren en te delen.

Door deze integrale aanpak ontstaat focus in het team, wordt specifieke expertise binnen (en buiten) de organisatie benut en wordt de toepassing in het ontwerp regelmatig getoetst, waardoor issues tijdig opgepakt worden. De DfX aanpak verhoogt de kwaliteit en betrouwbaarheid van het opgeleverde product, én het project.

Gemiddeld faalt tachtig procent van de productinnovaties. Deze producten verdwijnen binnen twee jaar van de markt, vaak omdat ze niet voldoen aan de behoeften van de doelgroep of niet op het juiste moment worden gelanceerd. Ook al ligt dit falingspercentage hoog, toch presteren sommige bedrijven aanzienlijk beter dan andere. Is het een kwestie van noodlot, geluk of toeval? Met Stijn Smet, managing director van Verhaert Innovation Academy, organiseerde BEACON onlangs een workshop over dit onderwerp voor een kleine groep opdrachtgevers. Op basis van deze ervaringen uit de eerste hand hebben we onderzocht wat deze succesvolle innovators onderscheidt.

Basisprincipes voor succesvolle innovatie

1. Afstemming op de bedrijfsstrategie
Om innovatiesucces voorspelbaar te maken, is de eerste vereiste dat innovatie moet bijdragen aan de bedrijfsstrategie. Elke innovatie-inspanning moet in lijn zijn met de overkoepelende bedrijfsdoelen op korte en lange termijn. Zoals Stijn Smet benadrukte tijdens onze workshop: “Wanneer innovatie niet afgestemd is met de strategie, wordt het een afleiding in plaats van een groeimotor.”

2. Portfolio-aanpak
In plaats van op één paard te wedden, zouden bedrijven hun innovatie-inspanningen moeten spreiden over meerdere projecten. Deze aanpak spreidt het risico en vergroot de kans op algemeen succes. Tijdens de workshop illustreerde Stijn Smet dit principe met een overtuigende case study van een toonaangevend technologiebedrijf dat een gediversifieerd innovatieportfolio. Door hun inspanningen over verschillende projecten te spreiden, verlaagden ze hun faalpercentage aanzienlijk en verhoogden ze hun kans op succes.

3. Het juiste proces volgen
Het derde principe is dat innovatie voorspelbaar kan zijn als het juiste proces wordt gevolgd. Dit houdt in dat er een gestructureerde, meetbare aanpak voor innovatie wordt opgezet. Een vaak aanbevolen hulpmiddel hiervoor is ‘innovation accounting’, dat bestaat uit meetbare parameters (metrics) vaststellen en ze monitoren gedurende je innovatieprojecten.

Innovatie meetbaar maken
Innovation accounting stelt bedrijven in staat hun voortgang objectief te meten. Metingen worden onderverdeeld in twee soorten: activiteitsmetingen en impactmetingen. Tijdens onze workshop identificeerden een diverse groep professionals, waaronder bedrijfsdirecteuren, R&D-managers, leiders van innovatieleveringsteams, CEO’s en directeuren van productontwerp en -ontwikkeling, de drie belangrijkste meetbare factoren voor succesvolle innovatie:

• Aantal gevalideerde aannames (activiteitsmetingen): Dit werd unaniem gekozen als de belangrijkste metric. Door aannames vroegtijdig en frequent te valideren, zorg je ervoor dat je innovatieproces op het juiste spoor zit en blijft.
• Percentage risicoreductie per periode/fase (impactmetingen): Door te meten hoeveel het risico afneemt in elke fase van het innovatieproces, kunnen bedrijven onderzekerheden doeltreffender beheren.
• Aantal behaalde mijlpalen (gates) per jaar (impactmetingen): Door de jaarlijks behaalde mijlpalen bij te houden, help je de algemene vooruitgang en kan je beoordelen of het innovatieplan wordt nageleefd.

Een gestructureerd proces implementeren
Bedrijven die echt uitblinken in innovatie begrijpen dat het er niet om gaat risico’s te elimineren, maar om ze effectief te beheren. Ze omarmen de inherente onzekerheid van innovatie en maken gebruik van gestructureerde processen en meetbare metrics om te navigeren op onvoorspelbaar terrein. Uiteindelijk gaat voorspelbaar innovatiesucces niet over het creëren van een rigide formule, maar over evenwicht vinden in een systeem waarin zowel creativiteit als structuur kunnen floreren.

On average, eighty percent of product innovations fail. These products disappear from the market within two years, often because they don’t sufficiently meet the target audience’s needs or aren’t launched at the right time. While this failure rate is high, some companies perform significantly better than others. Is it a matter of fate, luck, or chance? With Stijn Smet, managing director of Verhaert Innovation Academy, BEACON recently organized a workshop on this subject for a small group of clients. Based on this first-hand experience, we explored what sets these successful innovators apart.

Key principles for successful innovation

1. Alignment with business strategy
To achieve predictable success in innovation, the first requirement is that innovation must contribute to the business strategy. Every innovation effort must be aligned with the overarching short- and long-term business goals. As Stijn Smet emphasized during our workshop, “When innovation is not strategically aligned, it becomes a distraction rather than a growth driver.”

2. Portfolio approach
Rather than putting all eggs in one basket, companies should diversify their innovation efforts across multiple projects. This approach spreads risk and increases the likelihood of overall success. During the workshop, Stijn Smet illustrated this principle with a compelling case study of a leading tech company that adopted a diversified innovation portfolio. By spreading their efforts across various projects, they significantly reduced their failure rate and enhanced their chances of success.

3. Following the right process
Finally, the third principle is that innovation can be predictable if the right process is followed. This involves establishing a structured, measurable approach to innovation. A tool often recommended for this purpose is ‘innovation accounting,’ which consists of setting measurable parameters (metrics) and monitoring them throughout your innovation projects.

Making innovation measurable
Innovation accounting allows companies to measure their progress objectively. Metrics are divided into two types: activity metrics and impact metrics. During our workshop, a diverse group of professionals, including business directors, R&D managers, innovation delivery team leads, CEOs, and directors of product design & development, identified the top three measurable factors for successful innovation:

• Number of validated assumptions (activity metric): This was unanimously chosen as the most important metric. Validating assumptions early and frequently helps ensure that innovation is on the right track.
• Percentage of risk reduction per period/phase (impact metric): Measuring how much risk is reduced in each phase of the innovation process helps companies manage uncertainties effectively.
• Number of milestones (gates) passed per year (impact metric): Tracking the number of milestones achieved annually helps assess the overall progress and adherence to the innovation plan.

Implementing a structured process
Companies that truly excel in innovation understand that it’s not about eliminating risk but managing it effectively. They embrace the inherent uncertainty of innovation while utilizing structured processes and measurable metrics to navigate the unpredictable terrain. In the end, predictable innovation success is not about creating a rigid formula but finding a balance in a system where both creativity and structure can flourish by working side by side.

When I first saw this innovation from the German company Sinn Power—solar panels sticking upright out of the water—I thought, “Well thought out, a disadvantage turned into an advantage, interesting!” These double-sided panels take up less space and benefit from the reflection and cooling effects of the water, which provide additional yield. Additionally, they are less affected by bird droppings, a common cause of efficiency loss in flat panels.

Double peaking
The idea originated from German regulations allowing a maximum of 15% water surface coverage. In August, Sinn Power plans to start constructing 1.8 megawatts of floating solar panels on a gravel pit near Munich. The company has previously developed vertical solar panels on land, including as alternative fences, in combination with agriculture or mounted on facades. 

Interestingly, the upright, two-sided panels, when facing east and west, offer a different generation profile compared to traditionally inclined solar panels. Instead of a single big peak in the afternoon, the upright panels deliver peak output twice a day. While these peaks are smaller in absolute terms, they align better with daily electricity demand peaks in the morning and evening. 

Heavy construction
Despite the innovation, I’m still not entirely enthusiastic. Firstly, I find these large objects in the water to be quite unattractive. To withstand wind and waves, the floats’ construction must be very strong and non-corrosive, requiring a lot of extra material, undoubtedly making it more expensive. Additionally, the heavy construction is unnecessarily large compared to land-based panels.
Furthermore, I question the impact of covering the water’s surface. Has there been any research on its effects on waterfowl and marine life? 

Lack of space?
The primary reason for having solar panels on water is the lack of space. However, according to a scan conducted by the Dutch Governmental organization RVO, about 50% of the roofs and parking lot surface area in the Netherlands is available for placing panels generating solar energy, which amounts to 725 km2. Of this, 58 km2 (8%) is directly suitable for panels’ installation. Solar panels can be placed on 348 km2 (48% of the surface area) if obstacles like fixing grid congestion or structural roof adjustments are solved. This presents a significant and easily mined potential. 

In conclusion, while the concept of solar parks on water is ingeniously conceived, I question their necessity and added value. Why opt for a difficult solution when an easier one is available?

Goed verzonnen, een nadeel is omgezet in een voordeel, interessant! Dit waren mijn eerste gedachten toen ik deze innovatie van het Duitse bedrijf Sinn Power zag: zonnepanelen die rechtop uit het water steken. Doordat ze dubbelzijdig zijn nemen ze minder ruimte in. En de reflectie van het wateroppervlak en de koeling van het water zorgen voor extra opbrengst. Bijkomend voordeel is dat ze minder last hebben van vogelpoep, één van de meest voorkomende redenen van rendementsverlies bij liggende panelen.

Dubbel pieken
Het idee is ontstaan door de Duitse regelgeving, die maximaal 15% bedekking van het wateroppervlak toestaat. Sinn Power hoopt in augustus te starten met de realisatie van 1,8 megawatt aan drijvende zonnepanelen op een grindgroeve in de buurt van München. Het bedrijf ontwikkelde eerder al verticale zonnepanelen op land, onder meer als alternatieve schutting, in combinatie met landbouw of gemonteerd aan gevels. 

Interessant is ook dat de rechtopstaande, tweezijdige panelen, als ze gericht zijn op het oosten en westen, een heel ander opwekprofiel leveren dan traditioneel schuin geplaatste zonnepanelen. In plaats van één grote piek in de middag, leveren de rechtopstaande panelen twee keer per dag piekproductie. Deze pieken zijn in absolute zin kleiner maar vallen beter samen met de dagelijkse pieken in de vraag naar elektriciteit, in de ochtend en avond.

Zware constructie
Toch weet ik niet of ik onverdeeld enthousiast ben over deze uitvinding. Ten eerste, ik vind deze grote objecten in het water best lelijk. En om tegen wind en golven bestand te zijn, moet de constructie van drijvers erg sterk zijn en niet roesten. Daarvoor is veel extra materiaal nodig, wat het ongetwijfeld duurder maakt. En de grote bouwconstructies zijn onnodig groot in vergelijking met panelen op land.
Daarnaast vraag ik me af: is het wel goed om het wateroppervlak af te dekken? Is onderzocht wat dit betekent dit voor watervogels en het onderwaterleven?

Ruimtegebrek?
Als belangrijkste reden voor zonnepanelen op water wordt ruimtegebrek aangegeven. Maar volgens een scan van RVO is zo’n 50% van het oppervlakte van daken en parkeerplaatsen in Nederland beschikbaar voor het opwekken van zonne-energie met panelen. Dat is 725 km2. Daarvan is 58 km2 (8% van het oppervlak) direct geschikt voor het plaatsen van panelen. Op 348 km2 (48% van het oppervlak) kunnen zonnepanelen geplaatst worden als een (mogelijke) belemmering opgelost is, zoals het verhelpen van netcongestie of het constructief aanpassen van daken. Kortom, best een groot en makkelijk te ontginnen potentieel.
Al met al twijfel ik aan de noodzaak en meerwaarde van zonneparken op het water. Het is super leuk bedacht. Maar waarom een moeilijke oplossing als het ook makkelijk kan?

Bij BEACON praten we vaak over manieren om ons team meer divers te maken. Als we naar genderdiversiteit kijken, doen we het eigenlijk niet zo slecht voor een bedrijf dat zich richt op complexe technische projecten. Er is echter ruimte voor verbetering op het gebied van leeftijd en culturele diversiteit.

In dit artikel wil ik graag belichten waarom diversiteit in projectteams belangrijk is en enkele inzichten delen van vrouwen die zich in door mannen gedomineerde vakgebieden begeven.

Diverse perspectieven stimuleren innovatie
Bij BEACON zijn we er trots op dat we projectmanagers van innovatie zijn. Om veranderingen effectief aan te pakken, begrijpen we hoe belangrijk het is om een divers team samen te stellen. Teamleden met verschillende culturele achtergronden of generaties kunnen unieke oplossingen inbrengen.

Zo werkte ik in mijn beginjaren als industrieel ontwerper aan een handleiding voor een medisch product. Het garanderen van begrijpelijkheid voor gebruikers van verschillende leeftijden, opleidingsachtergronden en culturen was van cruciaal belang. Destijds was ik werkzaam in Australië en was ik het enige teamlid wiens moedertaal geen Engels was, wat mij een uniek perspectief gaf op de beste woordkeuze. Om zo’n project succesvol te maken is een divers team van onschatbare waarde, omdat verschillende culturen, leeftijden en geslachten een verschillende kijk kunnen hebben op de beste woorden, beelden of zelfs kleuren die je kunt gebruiken.

Oké, nu weten we dat diversiteit een aanwinst is voor onze teams. Maar diversiteit kan ook uitdagingen met zich meebrengen. Ik zal nu enkele aspecten belichten die we tegenkwamen als vrouwen in een door mannen gedomineerd vakgebied, omdat dit de uitdagingen zijn waarmee we ervaring hebben.

Benutten van sterke punten van vrouwen en uitdagen van genderstereotypen
Toen ik mijn collega’s vroeg wat vrouwen tot een grote aanwinst voor een team maakt, werd opgemerkt dat er binnen de geslachten een grotere spreiding van persoonlijkheden en vaardigheden bestaat dan tussen de geslachten. Dit gezegd hebbende, worden vrouwen over het algemeen beschouwd als beter in het omgaan met gevoelens en relaties, ze zijn attenter en beter georganiseerd. Deze vaardigheden zijn uiterst nuttig om als projectmanager uit te blinken, dus vrouwen beschikken op dit gebied over een groot potentieel.

Het zijn vaak vrouwen die het initiatief nemen tot vriendelijke daden, zoals cadeautjes voor een zieke collega of het brengen van ontbijtgebakjes voor het team dat zo hard heeft gewerkt. Maar zou deze vriendelijkheid ook schadelijk voor ons kunnen zijn? Vrouwen krijgen vaak taken toegewezen als het maken van aantekeningen, het halen van koffie voor gasten of het organiseren van evenementen. Gedurende mijn carrière ben ik deze situatie persoonlijk tegengekomen. De vraag rijst: bieden vrouwen zich uit vriendelijkheid eerder vrijwillig aan voor deze activiteiten, of blijven onze collega’s vasthouden aan stereotiepe verwachtingen?

Mijn suggestie aan vrouwen in soortgelijke situaties zou zijn om van zich te laten horen. Naar mijn mening is het volkomen acceptabel om aan te geven dat je al eerder aantekeningen hebt gemaakt en dat je het op prijs zou stellen als een andere collega dit deze keer zou kunnen afhandelen.

Gelijksoortig gedrag, contrasterende waarnemingen
Dit brengt ons bij een andere uitdaging voor vrouwen in projectmanagement: assertiviteit kan anders worden waargenomen, afhankelijk of het van een man of een vrouw komt.

Essentiële eigenschappen van een projectmanager zijn onder meer directheid en resoluut de doelstellingen van het project beschermen. Wanneer mannen deze eigenschappen vertonen, worden ze vaak geprezen om hun vermogen om stand te houden en “hun mannetje te staan”. Omgekeerd, wanneer vrouwen dezelfde eigenschappen vertonen, worden ze vaak bekritiseerd en bestempeld als brutaal of bazig. Vrouwen passen om die reden vaak hun communicatieaanpak aan, ze laten zich gelden zonder al te confronterend over te komen.

Authentiek leiderschap omarmen
Op de werkvloer van vandaag betreden steeds meer vrouwen technische vakgebieden en nemen leiderschapsrollen op zich. Deze groei markeert een merkbare verschuiving. We willen graag meer vrouwen aanmoedigen om voor een carrière in projectmanagement te kiezen, omdat het een carrière is die gemakkelijk aansluit bij een breed scala aan ambities en doelstellingen. Bovendien heeft de sector baat bij een meer divers aanbod aan projectmanagers.

Op basis van de gevoelens die werden gedeeld door de vrouwelijke collega’s die ik voor dit artikel heb geïnterviewd, wil ik graag afsluiten met een advies aan vrouwen die beginnen aan een loopbaan als projectmanager.  

Blijf trouw aan jezelf. Je vrouwelijke eigenschappen zijn troeven, dus benut ze. Verminder je bijdragen niet alleen omdat je een andere benadering hebt dan je mannelijke collega’s. Authenticiteit versterkt leiderschap.

The Power of Diversity in Project Teams
Insights from women working in Male-Dominated Fields

At BEACON we often talk about ways to get our team more diverse. Looking at gender diversity, we are actually not doing too bad for a company that focusses on complex engineering projects. However, there is room for improvement in terms of age and cultural diversity.

In this article I would like to take a look at why diversity in project teams is important and share some of the insights from women navigating male dominated fields.

Diverse Perspectives Fuelling Innovation
At BEACON, we pride ourselves as project managers of innovation. To tackle change effectively, we understand the importance of assembling a diverse team. Individuals from varied cultural backgrounds or generations can offer unique solutions.

For example, in my early years as a Design Engineer I was working on an instruction manual for a medical device. Ensuring comprehensibility for users of diverse ages, educational backgrounds, and cultures was crucial. At the time I was working in Australia and the only non-native English speaker on my team, this gave me an unique perspective on the best choice of words. To make such a project successful a diverse team would be invaluable as different cultures, ages and genders might have a different view on best words, imagery or even colours to use.

Okay, now we know that diversity is an asset to our teams. But diversity might also bring challenges. I will now highlight some aspects we found as women working in a male dominated field, as these are the diversity challenges we have experience with.  

Leveraging Women’s Strengths and Challenging Gender Stereotypes
When asking my colleagues about what makes women a great asset to a team it was noted that there is a wider spread of personalities and skills within genders than that there is between genders. This being said, in general women are considered better at managing feelings and relationships, they are more attentive and well organised. These skills are extremely beneficial for excelling as project managers, indicating that women hold great potential in this field.

Women are often the ones initiating acts of kindness, like gifts for a sick colleague or bringing some breakfast pastries for that team that has been working so hard. But could this kindness also prove detrimental to us? Women often find themselves assigned tasks such as note-taking, fetching coffee for guests, or organizing events. Throughout my career, I have personally encountered this situation. The question arises: are women volunteering more readily for these activities out of kindness, or are our colleagues defaulting to stereotypical expectations?

My suggestion to women facing similar situations would be to speak up. In my view, it is entirely acceptable to express that you’ve taken notes previously and that you’d appreciate it if another colleague could handle them this time.

Similar Behaviour, Contrasting Perceptions
This brings us to a different topic, as another challenge for women in project management that this assertiveness can be perceived differently depending on whether it’s coming from a man or a woman.

Essential traits of a project manager include being direct and resolutely protecting the project’s objectives. When men exhibit these attributes, they are often praised for their ability to being able to stand their ground (or as we say in Dutch “je mannetje staan” – which literally means standing like a man). Conversely, when women exhibit the same traits, they are frequently criticized unfavourably and labeled as sassy or bossy. Due to this women frequently adjust their communication approach to assert themselves without appearing overly confrontational.

Embracing Authentic Leadership
In today’s workplace, more women are entering technical fields and taking on leadership roles, this growth marks a noticeable shift. We aspire to encourage more women to pursue careers in project management, a career that can be customized to align with individual aspirations and objectives. Furthermore, the industry stands to gain from a more diverse range of project managers
In wrapping up this article, I wish to offer some guidance for women embarking on a career in project management, echoing the sentiments shared by everyone I interviewed.

Stay true to yourself. Your female traits are assets, so utilise them. Don’t diminish your contributions just because you adopt a different approach than your male counterparts. Authenticity enhances leadership.
